Generation West Virginia Annual Winter Work Session

Generation West Virginia is hosting its Annual Winter Work Session on Saturday, March 20th (Final Day of Winter!) at the Blennerhassett Hotel in Parkersburg, WV from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  (Sub-committees will be meeting after our general session between 3 and 5 p.m. with space reserved at the hotel.)

We will be celebrating 3 years of our growing movement! This Work Session provides time for you to network with other young talent organization (YTO) leaders in the state (now at 11 region partners), discuss Generation WV progress and plans for the next three years, coordinate collaborative projects, hear from state leaders, host sub-committee meetings, and much more.

Due to the location of this meeting Generation WV is offering a special lodging opportunity to those traveling three hours or more for the session.  We have reserved a block of rooms at a reduced rate for those wanting to come in and stay on Friday night. (Please let us know in your email to confirm your attendance if you want the overnight accommodations options)

Due to the size of the meeting space and cost we are providing a free registration to the following folks:

-          Two representatives from each young talent organization, preference to your leadership team (total of 22)

-          Members of the Generation WV Steering Committee (total of 15)

-          GWV Sub-Committee Co-Chairs (total of 10)

-          If you are affiliated with your local Chamber(s) of Commerce, your Chamber’s Ex. Director or other lead staff person is invited to attend

If your YTO wishes to send more than two representatives and your one representative on the Generation WV Steering Committee (total of 3), there will be a charge of $30/person to alleviate the costs of the meeting.  Extra seating will be limited!

We ask each region to be prepared to give a 3 to 5 minute update on your major accomplishments this past year and plans for the future.

We are proud to announce the inaugural First Friday!

We’ve heard from many of you over the last few years that you’d like to get more involved, but aren’t sure when and where meetings are held. For many of you, once you’ve signed up on the website, the question of, “What next?” arises and unfortunately is not usually answered. We recognize that our events have been infrequent, and irregular. In light of this we’ve decided to change the format of our monthly board meetings. In order to be more inclusive we’ve decided to open up the board meetings to all interested parties. These meetings will take place the First Friday of each month at a different restaurant. Friday March 5th will be the kick-off of this new style meeting at JP Henry’s in Parkersburg on Emerson Ave from 5:30pm-8pm.

West Virginia’s Young Leadership Conference

YOUNG LEADERS TO HOST CONFERENCE THAT LAUNCHES GENERATION WEST VIRGINIA INITIATIVE

West Virginia’s Young Leadership Conference: Realizing West Virginia’s Potential

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Leaders of Generation West Virginia, in partnership with Vision Shared, today announced that young leaders, those 21 to 45 years of age, from across West Virginia are stepping up to take action and improve the situation for all young people across West Virginia. As their public launch, Generation West Virginia will be hosting the inaugural West Virginia’s Young Leadership Conference: Realizing West Virginia’s Potential the afternoon of Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Sponsored by Chesapeake Energy, this conference is in partnership with and succeeds the 6th Annual West Virginia Leadership Conference that focuses on generational leadership being held at Waterfront Place Hotel in Morgantown.

“It is easy to complain about a problem, but it takes true leadership and vision to take action in improving a situation,” said Paul Daugherty, Generation West Virginia spokesperson and planning committee member. “Generation West Virginia is bringing together some of our state’s best and brightest from various career fields to network, enhance their leadership skills and advance themselves and our state’s young talent. The conference is an excellent opportunity for young people to get involved in shaping West Virginia’s future and interacting with our state’s established leaders.”

Michael Garrison, president of West Virginia University, will deliver the keynote address focusing on excelling in your career as a young leader, opportunities for young leaders to be successful in West Virginia, and other insights.

In addition to Garrison, the conference includes workshops, panel discussions, and interactive speakers with a focus on Realizing Our Potential through leadership development, mentorship, professional networking, and entrepreneurship. Beginning with a conversation on how to retain, attract, and advance young leaders in West Virginia’s communities, the conference allows young leaders the opportunity to provide their input on how to shape our state’s future, with attendees being encouraged to take action and lead by example.

For more information about Generation West Virginia or to register for West Virginia’s Young Leadership Conference, visit www.generationwestvirginia.com.

Generation West Virginia was established in 2007 as a coalition of young leader groups from across the state to ensure that West Virginia is a state that retains, attracts, and advances young talent.

Vision Shared is a cultural movement of significant importance to the state of West Virginia which encourages our citizenry to work together in new ways. Fundamentally, the effort seeks to bring about positive change and grow our economy.

YEL partners with Area Chambers for “Mixing of Generations” Reception
Mentor Reception held to assist in developing young leaders, 21 to 45 years old

MARIETTA, OH - Retaining, attracting, and advancing young talent is the main purpose of the Young Emerging Leaders of the Mid-Ohio Valley, known by many as YEL. As part of YEL's mission, they are partnering with the Chairmen of the Boards of the Chamber of Commerce of the Mid-Ohio Valley and the Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce for a unique reception to bring together emerging leaders and established leaders of the Mid-Ohio Valley.

"YEL is hosting this event to help young leaders, like myself, to get to know our established leaders who can share their leadership, work, and community experiences to help me advance my skills," noted Tony Long, a member of the YEL planning committee. This inaugural event is being co-hosted by Roger Sheppard, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of the Mid-Ohio Valley, and Dave Archer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce.

YEL is hosting this event to encourage additional interaction between the established leaders of the Mid-Ohio Valley and those emerging leaders, 21 to 45 year olds, who are looking for professional mentors to develop relationships that connect them to the community, advance their leadership skills, and learn from the experiences of others. The event is Friday, May 2, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at The Campus Martius Museum in Marietta, Ohio.

YEL is one of six different young leader groups in West Virginia, called Generation West Virginia, devoted to making our communities more attractive and viable for young leaders to stay, move to, and live. For more information log onto: www.yelmov.org or email: pddaugherty@gmail.com.

Relive the Awesome ‘80s with YEL

Relive the “Awesome ‘80s” with YEL

(Feb 1, 2008) PARKERSBURG — It was the era of Ronald Reagan and Michael Jackson, and the era of wearing pegged jeans with neon striped shirts. It was the 1980s. And whether you are in your 20s, 30s or 40s, chances are you remember at least a little bit of the decade when Saturday morning cartoons featured the Smurfs and the Muppet Babies, and the best Christmas presents were either a Cabbage Patch doll or an original Transformer toy.

Later this month, YEL, or the Young Emerging Leaders of the Mid-Ohio Valley, will celebrate the decade during its third annual event, “Totally Awesome ‘80s,” from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Parkersburg Art Center.

The event will feature dinner catered by Austyn’s Restaurant of Marietta, ‘80s music and decorations. Guests are encouraged, but not required, to dig through their closets and pull out those old glitter gloves, red zipper jackets, acid wash jeans or any other 80’s era garb that they cherish too much to throw out (guests may also wear business casual).

Tickets for the event cost $25 per person, or $50 per couple.

The event will also feature a guest speaker, Wally Kandel, who is the plant manager of the Solvay Advanced Polymers facility in Marietta.

YEL Co-Chair Mike Archer stated, “We are very excited to have Wally Kandel as our featured speaker for the event.  One of our missions is to increase the number of young leaders that call the Mid-Ohio Valley home, and Wally, with his credentials, could work anywhere in the world, but he has chosen to work and raise his family in the Mid-Ohio Valley.  Additionally, one of our missions is to get young people involved with community service and Wally sets a great example for our young leaders because he always finds the time to give back to his community.”

Formed in 2005, YEL’s mission is to create a community of young business leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals in the Mid-Ohio Valley for the purpose of strengthening our economy and spurring economic development by retaining, recruiting, and advancing our young emerging leaders. Now in its third year, the group has more than 130 members.

For additional information or to purchase tickets for the event, contact YEL Board member Carrie McNamee at 740-373-3745 or cmcnamee@wmcap.org.

YEL Members Learn How to Be Creative in Business

The Young Emerging Leaders of the Mid-Ohio Valley (YEL) held an event on December 13th at Caesars Restaurant in Parkersburg. The topic for the evening was “Creativity in Business,” and the speaker was Mr. Rich Schaffer, Senior Vice President of the West Virginia Credit Union League. After  dinner and networking with YEL members and guests, Mr. Schaffer spoke to the group of approximately 25 young professionals about finding creativity in their every day business lives.

Mr. Schaffer stated he was not there to talk about how to do things “outside the box.” He wanted to talk about doing things “inside the box,” only in a creative way. He also wanted to dispel the myth that people had to be born with creativity. Mr. Schaffer stated that creativity could be learned. He also gave examples of products that were a result of individuals taking a creative approach, such as Post-It® Notes from 3M.

“I found Mr. Schaffer’s presentation and ideas about creativity in the work place to be very interesting and inspiring,” said Sarah Holt, YEL Board Member. “He had some great ideas that I hope I can take back to instill creativity in my own every day business life. I think he talked about things we can all relate to, and I hope everyone who was present gained something from his presentation. I know I did.”

At the end of the presentation, the YEL Board presented Mr. Schaffer with a donation in his honor to the Parkersburg Catholic High School Athletic Foundation Fund held by the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation, and a box of chocolates from Holl’s. There was also a drawing held for a creative prize that Mr. Schaffer brought, and it was won by Mr. Tres Ross of the Ross Foundation.

YEL is a non-profit group, associated with the Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce, which seeks to bring young professionals in the Mid-Ohio Valley together for networking, professional development and leadership development opportunities. Please visit the web site, www.yelmov.org, for more information about the organization, or e-mail yelmov@yelmov.org.

YEL Donates Tree In Memory of Ben Weaver

To honor a former member of YEL, Ben Weaver, who tragically passed away this past fall in a rafting accident - YEL members worked to decorate and donate a tree in his memory to the annual Easter Seals Festival of Trees.  YEL member Amanda Daugherty coordinated the effort with help from other members Sarah Holt, Kristin Runion, Paul Daugherty, Tres Ross and Paul Daugherty. The theme of the tree was "Piano Man" in remembrance of Ben's love of music.  The tree sold at auction for $300.

"I would like to thank all who participated and donated items towards the tree.  "The Festival of Trees" was an asset to YEL, in way of promoting YEL's abilities of helping those in need.  I'm hopeful to participate in next years "Festival of Trees."  Now knowing what it takes to put a tree together, we can start working on it earlier this year and make next years sale over $300," commented coordinator Amanda Daugherty.

YEL has also been collecting donations from members in honor of Ben to be put towards the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation Symphony Fund.  Any member interested may make a donation, with a notation in the memo line that it is in memory of Ben Weaver, and send it to Sarah Holt’s attention at the Foundation.  YEL plans to match up to $250 of all donations collected.

Creativity in Business

“Why is it that when we were children it seemed we had an endless supply of Crayola crayons, but by the time we reached the working world we were left with a black pen?”  asks Rich Schaffer who will be speaking at the next YEL event on December 13, 2006.

Applying creativity in business and looking outside the box will be the focus of the evening, which will include interactive learning exercises for all attendees. “Creativity is just as essential to business as it is to the arts,” Schaffer said. “You must innovate if you want to grow your company.”

Schaffer is Senior Vice-President of the West Virginia Credit Union League, where he has been employed since 1988.  The League is headquartered in Parkersburg, WV and is the trade association for West Virginia’s 114 credit unions representing nearly $3 billion in assets.  His day-to-day duties include advising association members on marketing communications related issues and payment system strategies, which he frequently speaks on throughout the state.

For most of Schaffer’s career, he has also been the association’s lobbyist in Charleston and Washington on financial related legislation affection the League’s association members.  He was recently recruited to as a member of the Vision Shared Creative Class Working Group – a mix of private and public sector professionals charged with devising new strategies in attracting creative and talented people to live and work in West Virginia.

Schaffer is a native and resident of Vienna, WV where also coaches 7-9 year olds in the Vienna Recreation youth soccer league.  He is also the President-Elect of the Parkersburg Rotary Club.

“I have a passion for collaborating with people who seek new ideas that make their companies, their communities, and/or the civic/church organizations function better,” Schaffer said.

“The evening will present an opportunity for learning, networking and hopefully tapping into some creative resources for all attendees to assist them in all aspects of their daily lives,” said Mindi Line, YEL Board Member and Event Coordinator.  “Anyone interested in attending may fill out the registration form on the back of this newsletter or contact yelmov@yelmov.org for more information, but remember you have to reserve your space in advance!  The cost is $20 per person and includes your dinner and all event activities.”

YEL Volunteers at Old Rotary House

On Saturday, October 14, 2006, the Young Emerging Leaders of the Mid-Ohio Valley (“YEL”) volunteered at the Old Rotary House project in Marietta.  The Old Rotary House is a community service project where the Marietta Noon Rotary Club is refurbishing an old house that will then be sold to a family in need, and the proceeds from the sale will be used to fund Rotary scholarships for local students.

Formed in 2005 to help combat the trend of young leaders leaving the Mid-Ohio Valley, YEL is a group of 130 young leaders from the Marietta/Parkersburg area.  The mission of YEL is “To create a community of young business leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals in the Mid-Ohio Valley for the purpose of strengthening our economy and spurring economic development by attracting, recruiting, retaining, and advancing our young emerging leaders.”

YEL Board Member Mike Archer stated, “One important aspect of our mission is to get our members involved in community service projects and we felt the Old Rotary House would be a great project for YEL to help out with.  Some of the things that we did included hanging insulation, putting up siding, and digging ditches, and I know the Rotary Club was very appreciative of YEL’s help on this project.”

Come Join YEL at Southwood Park Waterslide!

Summer is still a few weeks away, but that isn't stopping the thermometer from creeping up to temperatures typically only felt during the doggiest days of August.

But there is some relief in sight.

Young Emerging Leaders of the Mid-Ohio Valley is hosting a special family-friendly summer event to help beat the heat from 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, July 9th at Southwood Park Waterslide in Parkersburg.

The group rented the waterslide for the entire two-hour period. Members of the group, their guests and people interested in joining YEL are invited to come and cool off at the park for free, although donations will be accepted to help offset the rental costs.

"This is a great opportunity for everyone to come out with their families and have fun!" said Mindi Line, one of the group's co-founders. "There will be no charge, but we are asking everyone to bring whatever you would like cooked on the grill and a covered dish."

Southwood Park has an Olympic-size swimming pool, a pond with fountains, miniature golf, a baseball field, basketball and tennis courts and plenty of covered picnic areas. But its most popular feature is the 435-foot waterslide.

The YEL event may mark one of the first time people will be able to use the waterslide this season. The waterslide opened later than expected this year because a pump installed at the waterslide when it was built in the 1980s needed to be replaced. The city ordered the part in April but it had not been delivered by Memorial Day weekend when the pools opened.

Parkersburg Mayor Bob Newell said in a news release that replacing the pump and opening the slide was a top priority.

The park is located on Belmont Road off of Blizzard Drive, also known as West Virginia Route 14 in Parkersburg.

The Young Emerging Leaders of the Mid-Ohio Valley will be holding their First Annual Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, July 29th at YMCA on Broad Street.  The tournament is scheduled to begin at 8am and will consist of a number of

Emerging Through the Decades - A Success

Continuing its growth and success the Young Emerging Leaders of the Mid-Ohio Valley (YEL) held its first annual event on Saturday, March 25th, at the Parkersburg Art Center. Over 75 young adults from across the Mid-Ohio Valley and the states of Ohio and West Virginia attended the event. “When you looked around Saturday evening, it was hard to believe that the organization did not exist a year ago,” said Ryan Ware, Co-Chair for YEL. “The major event committee should be well commended for their effort and time spent coordinating such an evening.”

The theme of the event was “Movin’ On Up-Emerging Through the Decades,” and the décor included clothing, accessories and music videos from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. “The theme of the YEL premiere event was to represent the decades that members have lived through: the 1970s, the 1980s, and the 1990s, as well as the idea that young members of the group are emerging as leaders in their communities,” said Bri Boyce, member of the YEL Major Event Planning committee. “Each of the three floors in the Parkersburg Art Center had the current art displays present, but each floor was also decorated by the YEL group to feature one of these three decades for the purpose of reminiscing and fun.”

The evening included a social hour, dinner provided by Austyn’s of Marietta, an enlightening speech from Beth Gorczyca, senior staff writer with The State Journal, many silent auction items, a live auction and dancing. “In the Marietta and Parkersburg region, you have opted to diverge from the common song everyone sings, and redraw the map so instead of believing this area can only be a place you are FROM-it becomes a place you, me and others want to GO,” Ms. Gorczyca said to the crowd during her speech. “That’s why a group like YEL is so important. They can offer guidance, direction and a gathering place for all of these thousands of people.”

“I have not heard one person who attended say anything but great things about the event,” said Jay Gerber, a local attorney. “I thought it was a great time and I’m looking forward to the next one.” Paul Daugherty, Co-Chair of YEL, said “This evening is for YEL to kick off its efforts and focus of retaining, recruiting, and advancing those between 21 to 45 years of age, and those young at heart. We look forward to moving forward with YEL’s other initiatives including partnering with business and industry leaders to identify employment needs and finding ways to bring back the younger generation to our community.”

Many people and organizations around the Mid-Ohio Valley made this event possible. Our lead sponsor for the event was Danser, Inc., and other sponsors included Pioneer Pipe, Inc. and Verizon. Other support was provided by Advantage Bank, Anytime Fitness, Austyn’s Restaurant and Catering, Big Mac Printing, Brianne Boyce, Chris Fouss and DJ Associates, Clay Center, Clear Channel Radio, Colonnade Restaurant, Comfort Suites, Contours Express, daVinci’s Restaurant, Davis Architecture Group, Will Crichton’s Band, Daytona Tans, Doppio, Keith White, Attorney at Law, Loghouse Homestead Bed & Breakfast, Melissa Liptak, Mary Kay-Jennie Barnett, Marietta Memorial Hospital, The Honorable Robert Newell, Mayor of Parkersburg, Old Carriage House B&B, Outback Steakhouse, Parkersburg Arts Center, Parkersburg News and Sentinel, Peoples Bank, Tres Ross, Salt Fork Resort and Conference Center, Sharp n’ Sassy, Shops at Grand Central Mall, Signarama, Snowshoe Resort, J.D. Williamson, Lori Woodyard-Full Circle Yoga, WTAP TV, and the WV Symphony Orchestra-Parkersburg.

The next monthly gathering for YEL will be on April 13th, at the Smoot Theatre in Parkersburg, W.V. For more information, please visit the YEL web site at http://www.yelmov.org.

As part of YEL’s Major Event on March 25, we welcome the opportunity to have area businesses and organizations serve as major event sponsors.  As one committee member noted, “serving as a major sponsor of the event at the $1,500 will allow for a company to be visible before the largest gathering of young adults (21 to 45 years of age) in the Mid-Ohio Valley opening up great business and client possibilities for their business with this age group.”  YEL has established three sponsorship levels: Major - $1,500 with significant marketing and media proceeds, $1,000 with many benefits, and $500.00.

YEL Hosts First Event
Maintaining the Young Adult Presence in the Mid-Ohio Valley Young Emerging

The Young Emerging Leaders Organization hosts Kick-Off Event

Retaining, attracting, and recruiting young people to the region is the main goal of a new organization, Young Emerging Leaders of the Mid-Ohio Valley. The group is being organized by volunteers from the area, including Mindi Line, John Line, and Paul Daugherty from the West Virginia side and Ryan Ware, Mike Williams, Mike Archer and many more from the Ohio side.

"This is the first of many events and activities that are focused on building the Young Emerging Leaders (YEL) organization. We are working to develop a professional and social network for young adults to create strong bonds with the community and the established leaders of the community," said Paul Daugherty, a co-founder of the new organization and executive director of the WVU at Parkersburg Foundation.

Combating the trend of young adults leaving the region, YEL, held its first event this past Monday evening, August 15, 2005, at The Blennerhassett Hotel. Over twenty-five young adults attended this first gathering focused on informing the public about the organization’s purpose and to gather input so it can plan its schedule of professional, social, and service events and activities that will launch in January 2006. Those attending included young leaders from many different professions from lawyers and financial planners to engineers, government, education, and healthcare workers.

The organization’s new website, www.yelmov.org, designed by member John Line lays out the group’s mission statement and goals: to create a community of young business leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals in the Mid-Ohio Valley for the purpose of strengthening our economy and spurring economic development by retaining, recruiting, and advancing our young emerging leaders.

"We plan to launch our official series of events starting in January 2006, but as we form our organization we hope to coordinate some informal gatherings throughout the late summer – fall time period. We encourage those interested in joining and attending an event to check out our website,” said Ryan Ware, an intern architect with Davis Architectural Group. Membership is open to any person between the ages of 20 to 40 years of age and those young at heart.

For more information, log on to the organization’s website at www.yelmov.org and register today. Everyone is encouraged to pass this address on to those in the area and those who have moved away!
